24–48 hour turnaround
Bid-ready in 24 to 48 hours
Price your surface grading work with our surface grading estimating services that turn your plan set into measured, defensible earthwork numbers. Grading is one of the first trades on site and one of the easiest to underprice. At SMA Estimating LLC, we compare existing and proposed grades across your entire site to quantify cut, fill, haul, and net volumes. Every estimate covers labor hours, equipment production rates, soil handling, compaction, and import or export costs, priced at current labor and equipment rates for your project's city and state. We build estimates around how your company actually bids, matching your templates, cost codes, or CSI divisions and deliver them in Excel and PDF with marked-up plans and written assumptions.
We combine grading-specific takeoff software with real production data to build a complete cost picture, not just a quantity sheet. Our estimators understand what makes grading different from every other trade, including contour interpretation, soil shrink and swell behavior, and the subgrade tolerances that separate rough grading from fine grading. That expertise is what keeps a few inches of missed elevation from turning into thousands of cubic yards of unpriced work.
Send your plans today. You get a fixed-price quote back the same day and a bid-ready surface grading estimate in 24 to 48 hours, or in 8 to 12 hours on rush.
What we takeoff
From cut-and-fill volumes to full bid packages, here is everything we measure and price on your grading projects.
Our takeoff team measures every graded surface, area, and dimension from your plans, delivering a detailed quantity takeoff in clear, itemized units you can price line by line.
We compare existing and proposed grades to calculate exact cut, fill, and net import or export volumes in cubic yards.
Our estimators quantify and price bulk earthmoving to bring the site to approximate design elevation.
Our expert team estimates final surface tolerances, subgrade shaping, and finish work ahead of paving, slabs, or landscaping.
Our site grading and sitework estimating covers full site packages, including clearing, stripping, shaping, and site preparation. Our expert team measures the whole sitework scope carefully, so your grading and site prep numbers are never priced on different assumptions.
We extract spot elevations, contour intervals, and slope percentages so drainage and pad grades are quantified correctly.
Our estimators calculate stripping depths, stockpile volumes, and respread quantities for topsoil operations.
We estimate proof rolling, moisture conditioning, compaction, and subgrade prep costs by area and depth.
Our expert takeoff team calculates haul volumes, truckloads, and disposal or borrow costs based on your net cut and fill balance.
We quantify silt fence, inlet protection, stabilization, and related items tied to your grading scope.
We turn measured quantities into a priced, formatted bid summary you can submit the same day.
We re-run affected quantities and costs when plans are revised, so your pricing stays current through the bid cycle.
What lands in your inbox
You get a complete, organized estimate package built for submission:
A fully unlocked Excel file with live formulas, delivered in your own template, cost codes, or CSI divisions. So you can edit quantities, swap in your own rates, and set your markup without breaking the sheet
The cost of getting it wrong
Grading sets the cost baseline for the entire site. Every cubic yard you move has to be dug, hauled, placed, and compacted, and each of those steps is priced separately. Get the volume wrong and every downstream number is wrong with it.
The problem is that grading quantities are not written on the plans. They have to be calculated by comparing existing contours against proposed contours across the whole site. A misread contour interval, a missed spot elevation, or a slope assumed instead of measured can change your cut and fill by a wide margin. And because the error spreads across the full surface area, a small mistake in depth becomes a big mistake in volume.
| Two-inch error across the site | Cost exposure at $12/CY |
|---|---|
| 1 acre | $3,200 |
| 2.5 acres | $8,100 |
| 5 acres | $16,100 |
| 10 acres | $32,300 |
Two inches is the depth of a bootprint. On a ten-acre pad it is the entire margin on the earthwork package, and nobody catches it until the trucks are already running.
Grading also drives compliance costs contractors routinely forget to price. Sites disturbing one acre or more generally require NPDES stormwater permit coverage and a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan under the EPA's construction stormwater program, and any excavation and sloping work has to meet OSHA's excavation standard, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P.
That is why we provide precise and accurate surface grading estimating services you can rely on. Our experienced team measures contour by contour so you get a defensible number before you commit, with your real earthwork cost and margin visible.
Our pricing is fixed and quoted upfront, with most grading estimates falling between $0.008 and $0.04 per square foot.
| Project Size | Typical Cost Per Sq. Ft. | Typical Estimate Fee | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small residential (under 10,000 sq. ft.) | $0.02 – $0.04 | $150 – $400 | |
| Standard residential/light commercial | $0.01 – $0.03 | $250 – $450 | |
| Large commercial (1 – 5 acres) | $0.008 – $0.02 | $450 – $850 | |
| Industrial/civil (5+ acres) | Quoted per project | From $850 | |
| Rush estimate | Add 20 – 30% | Quoted on request |
Your final cost depends on project size, grading complexity, how detailed the plans are, which deliverables you need, and how fast you need it back. Send the plans and we will give you a fixed price before any work starts, with no hourly billing and no surprises.
Most surface grading estimates are delivered within 24 to 48 hours, with large or complex sites taking 2 to 5 business days and rush service available in 8 to 12 hours. Rush service is available on most projects at no change to accuracy.
| Project Type / Scope | Typical Turnaround |
|---|---|
| Small residential project (under 1 acre) | 24 hours |
| Standard residential or commercial site | 24 to 48 hours |
| Large commercial or industrial site | 2 to 4 business days |
| Complex site grading (multi-phase, heavy contour change) | 3 to 5 business days |
| Rush estimate | 8 to 12 hours |
Projects Types
We estimate grading on projects of every size, from single home pads to multi-acre industrial sites.
Built for bidders
Contractors, builders, and developers across the country rely on our numbers to bid faster and win more work. Our clients include:
Why contractors stay with us
We do not treat grading as a line item inside a general site estimate. Our estimators work specifically with existing versus proposed contours, spot elevations, slope percentages, subgrade depths, and cut-and-fill balance.
Our team has priced sitework, earthwork, and grading across residential, commercial, industrial, and civil projects in all 50 states. We have seen how these jobs actually go wrong, and we price for it.
Our estimators work in the earthwork takeoff software the industry runs on, kept current as new versions release, with pricing built on RSMeans data and current regional labor and equipment rates.
Your grading numbers are measured by estimators with civil and construction engineering degrees, credentialed through the bodies that set US cost estimating standards.
If your plans are revised mid-bid, we update the affected quantities and pricing at no extra charge during your bid cycle.
We apply labor, equipment, and haul rates for your actual city and state, not a national average.
Your estimate arrives in your Excel template, your cost codes, or CSI divisions, whichever way you bid. Send your template with your first project, and we will use it on every job after that.
Your plans, pricing, and bid strategy stay yours. We work under an NDA on request and never share client project data.
Tools and credentials
Every grading takeoff runs through earthwork-specific software, prepared by estimators who carry credentials from the bodies that set US cost estimating standards.
Six simple steps
Here is how your grading plan turns into cut, fill, and cost you can submit with confidence.
We open your grading plan and identify existing contours, proposed contours, spot elevations, slope directions, and the grading limit line. Anything unclear gets flagged as a question before we start measuring, not after delivery.
Our team digitizes every graded surface: building pads, parking areas, drives, swales, slopes, and transitions. Each area is measured to its own depth and treatment rather than averaged across the site.
We build a surface comparison between existing and proposed grades and calculate cut, fill, and net volumes in cubic yards. Shrink and swell factors are applied by soil type, and import or export requirements are identified.
We price excavation, hauling, placement, moisture conditioning, and compaction using local labor rates, equipment production rates, and current material and disposal costs for your project location.
Another senior estimator reviews the volumes, unit costs, and totals against the drawings. Cut-and-fill balance is verified and any figure that looks off is traced back to the plan before the file goes out.
You receive the finished estimate in Excel and PDF, with marked-up plans, a bid summary, and written assumptions and exclusions, formatted the way you asked for it.
Questions we get asked
Surface grading estimation is the process of measuring how much earth must be cut, filled, moved, or imported to bring a site from its existing elevations to its designed elevations and then pricing that work. The output is a quantity takeoff in cubic yards plus a cost estimate covering labor, equipment, and materials.
Send your grading plan or civil drawings with existing and proposed contours, the site plan, any geotechnical or soils report, and the specifications. If you have a bid form or template, send that too. PDF plan sets are fine.
Yes. Estimates are delivered bid-ready in Excel and PDF, and we can format them to your own template, cost codes, or CSI divisions so they go straight into your submission.
Send us the addendum, and we will update the affected quantities and pricing during your bid cycle at no additional charge.
Yes. We estimate projects nationwide and apply labor, equipment, and haul rates specific to your project's city and state.
Yes. Every plan set, quantity, and price you send us stays strictly between your team and your assigned estimator. We never share, resell, or reuse client project data. We also sign NDAs on request before any files change hands.
Send your drawings and we will come back the same day with a fixed price and a delivery date. Your bid-ready in 24 to 48 hours.
